From the onset of the war in Ukraine, our partners - the Hungarian Unitarian Church and its charity organization Gondviselés (in English: Providence) - have responded to the needs of Ukrainian war refugees.

In September 2024, Gondviselés volunteers Olivér Kiss, journalist, and Vladimir Skalski, refugee from Odesa living in Cluj/Kolozsvár, undertook a life-threatening mission to deliver aid (food, health equipment, adult diapers, defibrillators) to Southern Ukraine. The transfer of the goods took place at the border crossing in Orlivka (on the Ukrainian side of the Danube's northern Dobruja section), an area that was affected by drone strikes the night before. The donations were received by the director of the Liubashivka city hospital.

Thanks to over 480 ICUUW members, individual donors, UU congregations and organizations, ICUUW has sent $112,075 in support of Gondviselés's vital work for Ukrainian war refugees.

On 13 April 2023, I joined the Ukrainian aid shipment program of the Providence Organization of the Hungarian Unitarian Church, for the second time. This was Providence’s 8th aid mission since the outbreak of the war: since March 2022, the organization has been delivering humanitarian aid to Transcarpathia (southwest Ukraine) and the war zone (Odesa and Mykolaiv area). This time we came to Berehove, the Diaconal Coordination Center of the Transcarpathian Reformed Church. The shipment included an 18-kW generator, a pallet of canned food and cooking oil, 30 tourniquets, and 400 wax candles.

On April 5, 2022, the Gondviselés (in English: Providence) Charity Organization of the Hungarian Unitarian Church launched a kindergarten class for 22 Ukrainian refugee children within the premises of the Hungarian Unitarian Church's Nursery School in Kolozsvár/Cluj. The contributions that Gondviselés received from various donors following the onset of the war – including funds raised by ICUUW through Faithify crowd funding and share-the-plate contributions – covered the cost to hire a certified kindergarten teacher and to provide a daily breakfast and warm lunch for the children.
